Slow Food has been active in Morocco since 2001, the year when argan oil joined the network as one of the first African Presidia. In the following years, 17 convivia were founded, along with three more Presidia (for Alnif cumin, Zerradoun salt and Taliouine saffron), and the Terra Madre network welcomed ten food communities and ten cooks. Recently the Moroccan network has also been participating in the Thousand Gardens in Africa project, creating 14 school, community and family food gardens.
Every year on December 10, the association celebrates Terra Madre Day with festive events, tastings and meetings between producers and consumers organized all around the country. Slow Food Morocco presents the diversity of their country's gastronomic heritage at many national and international events. Every two years, a Moroccan delegation of producers, researchers and cooks travels to Turin to participate in the gathering of the global Slow Food and Terra Madre network.
The protection of good, clean and fair products, the safeguarding of traditional foods and knowledge, the socio-economic development of small-scale Moroccan producers and awareness-raising among consumers through events, Taste Workshops and tastings are just some of the objectives pursued by Slow Food in Morocco.
