Gessica and Gianni Bordini are the brains behind the Casa del Gusto, which sells Italian products in the heart of Amsterdam and functions almost like a farm shop for producers. The Alliance Between Chefs and Slow Food Presidia in the Netherlands has been started in part thanks to their passion and commitment.
The Casa del Gusto has already been distributing Italian Presidia products for several years, along with a selection of other high-quality Italian artisanal products. Gessica and Gianni's business is more than just a shop. They regularly organize events with chefs and with producers who talk about the story of their products, their history and origin. For Terra Madre Day, the worldwide celebration of local food that Slow Food holds every year, they always involve both Italian and Dutch Presidia.
Over the years, with great patience and perseverance, they have been communicating to their customers about the producer, the story and the hard work that lies behind every product, explaining to them the difference between artisanal and industrial products and the nuances between different products. Slowly, the consumers have begun to understand, learning how to recognize and appreciate quality. In the shop, every day, men and women of all ages are not only buying, but also asking questions, finding out about producers, places of origin, recipes for cooking the products and wine and beer pairings.
The Casa del Gusto is trying to promote and publicize a new sensitivity in a country where industrial products dominate the shops and supermarkets, a country that has only recently seen a nascent interest in artisanal and local products.
