Ouagadougou Community Garden
Slow Food Venice Convivium, Italy
Burkina Faso’s Amicale des Foréstiers association promotes better management of the country’s natural resources. The president, Joséphine Kardiatou, is an agronomist and coordinates activities in the garden and the work of the women who tend it. The women are grouped together in the Nabonswende association. The community garden covers around four hectares and is located in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the capital Ouagadougou. It is planted with many plants, like carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, zucchini, cucumbers, chili peppers, mint, bolomboulou (hibiscus) and boulvanka, whose leaves are used in the local cuisine. The women also cultivate medicinal plants like lemongrass, morning glory, andropogon, cassia (excellent for digestion), kinkeliba and walbissim (used to cure fever). Only natural fertilizer is used in the garden. The women would like to participate in training sessions and buy tools.
