How are the Presidia funded?
The
construction of a Presidia project has a few primary costs:
- production of communications material about the Presidia,
- involvement of the food producers in events,
- visits and communication between Slow Food and producers,
- any technical assistance such as veterinary visits, construction
of on-site facilities or consultancy on production guidelines.
The 'baseline'costs of the Presidia can run between 3000 and
15000 Euro for the first year of the project.
In Europe and North America, these costs are covered by sponsors
of the Presidia – often regional tourism boards or agricultural
councils interested in local promotion. In some cases, these
costs are covered by cooperatives of producers themselves.
In Italy, there are a few global sponsors for the Presidia
projects, such as the Agricultural Ministry and the COOP supermarket,
that subsidize general start-up and promotional costs for
the Presidia.
In the developing world, the Presidia are funded by the Slow
Food Foundation for Biodiversity, the fundraising arm of Slow
Food. Through the Foundation, Presidia are often ‘adopted’
by companies interested in assisting economic development
through traditional agriculture. Project sponsors agree to
partner with an individual project for a set period, and donate
directly to fund the improvement of the Presidia through the
acquisition of machinery, salaries for agronomists, and so
on.
