Native African products

Some of the thousands of edible plant species that have contributed to feeding African populations over the past centuries are native to the continent. The Ethiopian highlands, for example, are the original home of coffee (Coffea arabica), while Africa red rice, oil palms, yam, black-eyed peas, Bambara groundnuts and black tamarind all originated in tropical West Africa. Watermelon is native to the Kalahari desert (and still grows wild in Botswana, South Africa and Lesotho) and traces of the plant found in Egypt date back 5,000 years.
