Tools on Slow Food Gardens in Africa
The handbook explains the project's philosophy and general objectives and offers a series of suggestions.
It is intended as a starting point along the journey towards a Slow Food garden, and not as a point of arrival. The local project coordinators and the communities will identify the practices best suited to the different environmental, social and cultural contexts in each country.
The handbook was completed together with the local coordinators and based on the knowledge of real food gardens realised since the beginnig of the 10,000 Gardens in Africa project.

Tools for Slow Food gardens educators

This is a handbook that covers all the topics that are in the Handbook but has been conceived for educators, and, therefore, goes much more into detail. It illustrates the motivations and sense of each operation (why local seeds are selected, why composting or crop rotation is carried out, why many different varieties are cultivated, why educational activities are organized), and explains how to implement each operation (from garden planning to seed selection, from water collection to the making a composter, etc.). This handbook also includes a series of practical fact sheets containing examples, photos and illustrations.

The Slow Food garden must be identificable: the name of the garden, the Slow Food logo and the name of the sponsor who covered the garden's expenses must be included on the sign. But it is also possible to add details about the project's philosophy, explaining how the garden is cultivated, the names of the varieties being cultivated... Signs can be made creatively, using salvaged materials and having children and young people do the writing and drawings. Slow Food also provides a very simple model in English, French and Portuguese.
