Santo Stefano di Sessanio Lentil

Abruzzo

Just a few millimeters in diameter, these purplish-brown, spherical lentils are very flavorful. They grow only on the slopes of the Gran Sasso, at altitudes over 1,000 meters above sea level. Legumes, particularly lentils, have long been cultivated here, and are mentioned in monastic documents from 998 A.D. The climate, with long, harsh winters and short, cool springs, is ideal for the lentil plants. The plants mature at different times, but once cut, if they are left in the fields—collected in sheaves and covered with a cloth—the seeds continue to develop and eventually ripen. Harvesting is always carried out manually, as the fields are difficult to access with machinery, and mechanization would mean the loss of 30 to 40 percent of the yield.

Seasonality

Lentils are harvested in August, but consumed dried and available all year.
Yields, already limited, are diminishing every year. The Presidium has joined a project started by the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park and Abruzzo’s regional agency for agriculture development services (ARSSA), and has allowed all the producers to join together into an association that controls the harvest and labeling, protecting consumers against the fake Santo Stefano di Sessanio lentils found on the market.
